Panel Discussion
Evaluation of Panelist
Panelist: Cathy Chia-Fang
Evaluator: Robyn Lockwood
1. Contributed equally compared to other members. (average)
You had a strong team and we've discussed how you are sometimes hesitant to speak; especially on a topic that you're not passionate about. However, I thought you held your own and made your presence known during this panel discussion.
2. Contributions were relevant and informative. (excellent)
Your details were relevant. What I thought really added to your contribution was the story you told. The story was effective and you told it well. As you offered that story, the audience members (your peers) were attentive. Nice job.
3. Used various gambits.
Opinion (excellent)
You are quite capable of doing this. I was happy to see it evident in your performance.
Agreeing (none)
Interrupting (excellent)
You jumped in! Great job!
Disagreeing (none)
Following up (none)
Clarifying (excellent)
I thought you did a nice job with these too. You summarized your team's viewpoint once with “As far as we are concerned…” It proves you can work as a team and that you can clarify.
Partially agreeing (none)
Probing questions (excellent)
As an audience member, you asked a good question that generated follow up discussion by several panelists. That's the mark of a good question.
4. Maintained eye contact with panelists and audience. (average)
Although I do think you can improve this a bit, you have improved and I was happy to see you facing forward and not looking at your notes as much—especially when you were actually speaking.
5. Spoke loudly and clearly. (excellent)
Your words were nice and clear. I doubt anyone in the audience had a problem understanding. I'd still strive to be a little louder though. I know part of this is just because you are a quiet person by nature. It's just that you have valuable input and I don't want it to get lost simply because people can’t hear you.
6. Write down any pronunciation problems.
I'd love to see you work on sentence stress. Practice by taking a passage (preferably from a work of fiction since that helps more with spoken English) and underlining the content words. Content words are words that carry meaning—usually nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Read aloud and stress those underlined words more. I think that'll help make you sound more rhythmic.
Write down any vocabulary problems.
I think you have a strong vocabulary.
Write down any grammar problems.
None to note.
Other notes: I've seen you really develop over the course of the quarter. I will remind you again to be positive and confident. It's easy for me to say, but hard to practice. Stay in touch with me and I'll do my best to keep you upbeat and proud. Your English skills are advanced and I'd like to see you keep studying. I imagine you'll do a great job in Oral Presentation. I'm just sorry I'm not teaching it this year and won't have the privilege of seeing you develop. Keep practicing. With some fine-tuning, you'll be a talented English speaker.
